Abstract
Features prints made since 1960 by 14 contemporary American painters: Chuck Close, Jim Dine, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Vincent Longo, Michael Mazur, Robert Motherwell, Claes Oldenberg, Nathan Oliveira, Philip Pearlstein, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist and Frank Stella. To demonstrate the properties of each graphic medium and how artists use them, prints are shown in stages and proofs. Exhibition includes an historical section-a survey of prints made by painters in America from 1670 to 1960-which traces the evolution of the print from an illustrative, reportorial form to a fine art medium, and provides the prints American painters have made since 1960. Focuses on graphics by painters (and excludes printmakers), because historically painters have brought the major innovations to the graphic arts. Catalog contains two illustrated essays on the evolution of American prints, 16701981, discussion of the prints of each of the 14 featured artists, and a glossary of terms. -- AATA
