Abstract
Outlines the history of papyrus making and its use. Discusses problems concerning the unfolding of papyrus scrolls-that is, exposure to damp air, sandwiching between damp sheets of blotting paper, bleaching, pressing, and drying. Attention is given to charred papyrus scrolls, which require special methods of unfolding. One interesting aspect, dealt with in detail, is the recovery of papyrus texts from the carton packing of Greek mummies, In the Ptolomaeic Period, the dead, after mummification, were packed in cartons made of discarded papyrus documents which for that purpose were glued together and pressed. The mummies, packed thus, were then coated with a paint coating of stucco and either burned in the desert or laid in wooden or stone coffins, Techniques to regain papyrus text from the carton packreviewed and their merits assessed. Finaly the consolidation of papyrus by means of a new although expensive product, namely fluid cellulose (made of cotton), is announced -- AATA
