Sources of error in the IGT surface strength test were investigated for newsprint and coated paper. Tenaperature, instrument calibration, testing procedure and timing, end-point velocity, and type of testing fluid were all found to contribute to experimental error. However, the greatest potential source of error for newsprint was operator interpretation of the ISO criteria for the onset of picking. Recommendations are made for standardization of the IGT surface strength testing procedure. -- AATA
