Abstract
The illuminations found in Greek manuscripts of the Byzantine period are well known for their fragility and often advanced condition of decay. This problem results from a complex deterioration mechanism set in motion by the materials and techniques used to create these images. Attempts to treat the problem, particularly with irreversible adhesives and consolidants, should be undertaken only with the utmost caution until a more complete understanding of the Byzantine miniaturist's method can be achieved.
