Abstract
The roads and bridges constructed in the Highlands under military, parliamentary and early Ministry of Transport auspices are examined principally in terms of their engineering con-siderations. The structures of the roads are recorded from a series of excavations undertaken as part of an on-going exercise in rescue archaeology along the line of the A9 Trunk Road reconstruction. The masonry bridges are grouped into several types whose particular building styles and characteristics are identified and described as a result of a broad survey. -- AATA
