Abstract
Two small devotional paintings of Jesus and Mary, tentatively attributed to a 16th century Portuguese artist, are discussed in regard to questions of materials and technique bearing on attribution. The conservation treatment of these severely damaged panel paintings is described in detail, including a discussion of the behavior of the wood panels and various methods considered to stabilize the support. The treatment chosen was the application of moisture barriers to the reverse of the panels which were ultimately housed in climate-controlled vitrines for exhibition. The design and construction of the vitrines is described. Treatment of the paint and ground required relaxing and setting of extensive cleavage, removal of varnish, recent and aged overpaint, and removal of lead white fills. The compensation of losses and inpainting are also discussed. -- AATA
