Abstract
Discussion of the portrait of Henry VIII by Hans Holbein the Younger. Includes a report of a technical examination of the painting on panel performed in the autumn of 1971 by Professor Stephen Rees Jones (of the Technology Department) of the Courtauld Institute of Art. The painting had been cleaned and restored in 1967 by Professor Jan Marchig in Geneva. Details of construction include a preparatory underdrawing, revealed in a black and white infrared photograph, and the technique of paint handling in two areas: golden embroidery formed by massicott with white lead highlights covered by gold leaf in a mordant gilding technique, and silver badges formed by white lead covered with tin leaf. -- AATA
