Abstract
The manual examines the effect of toxic substances on the main organs of the body. It analyzes the hazardous effects of solvents, aerosol sprays, acids and alkalis, the dangers of lead pigments and other pigments containing heavy metals. It lists the health hazards associated with the production of ceramics. The different materials and methods used by sculptors are also considered for safety factors, in their traditional work as well as in that involving welding, soldering, and brazing, and the use of all kinds of plastic materials (acrylic, polyester, epoxy resins, etc.). The risks involved in printmaking, photography, textile arts, stained glass, and commercial art are also reviewed. The supervision of children while manipulating art materials and conditions of safety in the studio are other subjects discussed. An appendix lists sources of safety equipment. -- AATA
