Abstract
The fire that destroyed the vault and roofing of the south transept of York Cathedral in 1984 was probably caused by lightning, although the hypothesis of arson has not been excluded. Emergency assistance was quickly organized and a temporary covering made of reinforced plastic was installed. Each proposal for reconstruction has been evaluated in terms of structure, materials, and cost. The reinforcement of preventive measures against fire is one of the important aspects of the restoration program.
