Abstract
A study of Hermen Rode's altar of 1481 in Tallin was done using infrared light. The emphasis of the study was upon the role of special kinds of photography in the documentation and examination of an art object prior to restoration. A drawing on the background walls was compared with the underpainting on the altar. Some conclusions were made regarding painting methods in Hermen Rode's workshop.
