Abstract
The woven decorative trim, pletenogo, dating from the 10th to the 15th centuries, is the subject of this study. Braids (abstractor's note: braid is a more precise English equivalent than the term woven as given by the author) from the 12th to the 14th centuries and pictorial recreations of trims from the later period were examined. These trims have been reproduced. Sources included architectural monuments, applied art, and book illustrations. The problem of the materials used for weaving in antiquity is discussed. Novgorod wood carving of the 10th through 13th centuries illustrates leather weaving, a technique which is also discussed. -- AATA
