The development of the magic lantern (i.e., projector of colored transparencies) is discussed in this short article. Particular attention is paid to 18th and 19th century inventions including the solar microscope and fantascope. An additional discussion of late 19th century animated lantem plates painted by a man named Desch includes information about their pigments and present good condition.
