Abstract
In the modern museum world there is a need for understanding between conservators and curators whose common goal is the preservation of both the meaning and physical substance of works of art. The authors call this activity custodianship. This article describes a project to reconstruct the 19th-century roots of the present professions of conservation and curatorship and to apply this information to the training of museum professionals.
