Fox Talbot's experiences with the fading of his early photographic prints led him to experiments with photomechanical reproduction processes and the development of the photographic engraving process of 1852. An improved version of the process followed in 1858. These discoveries enabled the reproduction of photographic images upon ordinary paper utilizing printer's ink and press. The basic steps of the 1852 technique (suitable for the reproduction of line drawings) and the 1858 technique (reproducing half-tone photographic images) are described. Investigations into other, less successful techniques are also mentioned. -- AATA
