Opacity is a complex subject which has been described in many publications. Often these have been difficult to comprehend by newcomers to the field, because of the mathematical content. This study attempts to describe the basics of opacity in a relatively simple, non mathematical fashion. It considers factors affecting opacity with particular reference to titanium dioxide pigments in paint systems.
