Abstract
From the point of view of conservation, composite metal objects can be divided into two groups: where the metal parts can be separated from the artifacts and treated separately and, where the metallic part must stay in place and be treated in the presence of all other materials. The ethical problems (the preservation of the original evidence) are particularly exposed in the first group. The author gives some basic examples and suggestions concerning textiles, decorative embroidery, garments, weapons, vehicles (especially ships), bookbinding, furniture, and architectural elements, as well as jewelry and stained glass. Objects exposed in open-air exhibitions and archaeological composite objects are presented as the most difficult cases.
