Abstract
Cadmium and its compounds can have both acute and chronic health effects. Acute inhalation of cadmium fumes (from welding, soldering, brazing, and other operations involving the heating of cadmium) can cause metal fume fever and, in severe cases, chronic pneumonia, which can be fatal. Chronic inhalation of the dust or fumes of cadmium or its compounds can cause a variety of health problems, including kidney dysfunction, lung disease, skeletal problems, cancer, and possible reproductive system problems. The kidney damage and cancer can, according to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), be caused by exposures below the present permissible exposure levels. Cadmium is found in dry pigments, paints, ceramic glaze and enamel colorants, low melting silver solders, and in metal alloys. A list of recommendations is given for when there is the possibility of inhalation of cadmium fumes or dust.
