Abstract
Traditional and modern methods of leather tanning differ in that after 1900 modern tanners use chemicals like sodium sulfate, sodium sulfhydrate, and sulfuric acid. The influence of these chemicals on the deterioration of vegetable tanned leather is explained with respect to a goatskin article tanned in about 1800 in Sudan, and since 1825 included in the collection of the National Ethnographic Museum in Leiden.
