Condensed version of thesis (submitted for the Post-graduate Diploma in Building Conservation) examines briefly the history of shaped gables in the Netherlands and England, and proposes possible origins for the English gables, and attempts to establish some principles for their conservation and repair. The latter portion of this paper discusses suitable replacements for original brickwork, repointing, and the construction of copings and flashings.
