Abstract
Note on ongoing research with thioacetic acid for acetylation of wood. It does not produce the drawbacks of acetic anhydride and acetyl chloride which are pollutants and corrosive to metals. The H<sub>2</sub>-S byproduct is non-polluting since it can be recycled. Acetylation so far achieved is 12.37% (threshold value to resist attack by wood rotting fungi is 17%) with a weight gain of 16.67% and anti-shrink efficiency of 48.2%. The wood retains its original color. Thioacetic acid may adversely affect the lignin-lignin and lignin cellulose bonds. The reaction is carried out at a temperature of 93 ° C. for at least four hours followed by oven drying at 100 ° C. -- AATA
