The present state of knowledge in dendrochronology is reviewed. The problems in setting up chronologies and synchronizing the chronologies of different regions are discussed. The results of age determination and thus the importance of this method for prehistoric studies are documented. The activities at dendrochronological laboratories in Germany are mentioned along with prospects for future research. -- AATA
