Abstract
Slags from iron melting were found in a pit excavated at a Halstatt-period settlement in southern Germany. The pieces are12-15cm in diameter and12-15cm thick. They consist of 6 distinct layers, a lower sandy layer, a zone rich in bubbles, a zone rich in iron oxide, metallic iron, and charcoal, and three upper layers with slightly varying amounts of different inclusions. The mineralogical composition, chemical data on the main oxides, and photomicrographs are provided in the text. -- AATA
