Slags from iron melting were found in a pit excavated at a Halstatt-period settlement in southern Germany. The pieces are12-15cm in diameter and12-15cm thick. They consist of 6 distinct layers, a lower sandy layer, a zone rich in bubbles, a zone rich in iron oxide, metallic iron, and charcoal, and three upper layers with slightly varying amounts of different inclusions.
