Abstract
This is the first woodworking article to be published on the rebuilding of the famous York Minster's roof following the devastating fire of 1984. The Minster's 12 carpenters are erecting the south transept roof and inner vault of English oak; their experience and expertise in working and maintaining wood influenced the decision to reject steel for this job because of uncertainty about the metal's longevity and the likelihood of contortion in a fire. The methods and materials this team uses are described with illustrations showing the ensemble and some important details.
