Old lining paste was removed from a painting by means of an enzymatic reaction. A wax slurry was used to prevent penetration into the painting. The enzymes and added glucose were adsorbed on carboxymethylcellulose in a phosphate buffer at pH 7. This created a thick mass which was used to remove the paste from the back of the painting. A successful removal of pastes depends on knowledge of the painting technique and a detailed pre-treatment investigation. See also AATA 16-1498, 18-1416, and 19-1636.
