Abstract
Two general applications are considered: sterilization of objects, and consolidation by in situ polymerization of a monomer. After an elementary consideration of the properties of radiation, the conditions needed to destroy insects and fungi are discussed. The question of changes induced in the object by irradiation, and hence that of a safe dosage level, is under study. Impregnation of fragile wood under vacuum with a monomer, followed by a radiation-induced polymerization has attracted attention. Various monomers are considered, along with the properties that are needed; a mixture of styrene and polyester is favored. The appendix adds some notes on radiation physics.
