Abstract
The use of high temperatures in storing and disinfecting grain after harvest is discussed in this paper. The influence of high temperature on insects, mites and fungi and on the grain itself is outlined and the importance of the interaction of the effects of temperature and relative humidity is stressed. The use of high storage temperatures is considered. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of high temperatures for disinfecting stored grain. The use of conductive heating and hot air heating in fluidized beds, spouted beds and pneumatic conveyers is described. Information on the use of solar, infrared, radio-frequency and microwave radiation for grain disinfestation is reviewed. The merits of high temperatures are considered in the light of varied levels of technology. The need for interdisciplinary studies on the manipulation of temperature for pest control, particularly with regard to the efficient use of energy, is stressed.
