This hung on the walls of the Cornish manor-house of Cotehole, where it was known to have been for at least 150 years, receiving an annual coat of paint. On the acquisition of the property by the National Trust its condition was such that it was described as ' an under life size figure in wood of a man accoutred in mail (the mail of painted gesso, probably of the late 18th or early 19th century)'. Cleaning and restoration removed many layers of black paint, revealing a mid-16th century Greenwich armour, made for a boy of about 12 years.
