At Cavallano, near Siena, the author visited a gypsum quarry which has been in use since Roman times and a <i>gesso factory where the mineral is burnt in kilns of various types, primitive and modern. A product called <i>gesso a oro, equivalent to the <i>gesso sottile of Cennini, is produced for the craftsmen of to-day.
