Abstract
Deposition of soluble salts often damages unearthed objects, especially objects excavated from deserts or dry weather areas. A blue-glazed pottery unearthed in Haft-Tepe, Iran (Achemenid Dynasty, 6th-4th centuries BC) covered with salt deposits was treated as follows: Salt deposits were found by x-ray diffraction to be sodium chloride. Salts were extracted by immersion in distilled water for seven days. This extraction was repeated 10 times. Completion of salt extraction was tested by an eight hour immersion in water and subsequent 72 hours of drying. If no salt appeared, the extraction was complete. Finally Paraloid B72 acrylic resin solution 20% im toluene was applied for protection. -- AATA
