Abstract
This paper discusses wool selection and raw-wool properties for tufted carpet yarns. Typical blends for a number of end-uses are given. The various properties of yarns produced by the established spinning systems (woolen and semi-worsted) are discussed in detail and the production of rotor and DREF spun carpet yarns is mentioned. The particular requirements of strength, uniformity and extensibility etc for tufting yarns is discussed in depth and typical tufting yarn specifications are given. Count recommendations for various cut and loop pile tufting gauges are tabulated. Finally the paper describes various yarn preparatory processes including, scouring, milling, setting, mothproofing etc.
