Abstract
This article concentrates on the development of the communications role of the Conservation and Collection Care (CCC) section at Historic Royal Palaces (HRP). Today, palace conservators not only maintain and develop HRP’s established reputation for conservation excellence but also play a central role in communicating their work to palace visitors, as well as helping to generate revenue. This article first discusses the HRP organisational changes that gave rise to the need for all palace staff, including conservators, to participate in the promotion of HRP and communicate their work. It then describes how communicating conservation has become a structured part of every conservator’s job and how skills have been built up for this work. Finally, this article will describe HRP’s first venture to deliver a visitor communication programme entitled ‘Ask the Conservators’, the increased integration of conservation communications into wider visitor programmes and how the programme has helped meet CCC and HRP goals and mandates.
