Abstract
The cold decomposition of sodium chlorite is caused by acidification or by addition of a reducing agent. Sodium hypochlorite is an intermediate in the release of active chlorine dioxide. A combination of bisulphites with an aldehyde function initiates the cold bleaching action. The full-scale application is indicated and cost savings are shown to be well worthwhile compared with hot chlorite bleaching; however, it would be premature to assess the method yet. -- AATA
