Abstract
This project is a preliminary investigation of a selection of possible consolidants for friable ceramics. The consolidants used in this experiment are P.V.A. solution (10per thousand AYAC in ethanol), B67 (5per thousand in xylene), B72 (5per thousand in xylene), Ketone Resin N (10per thousand in xylene), Elvacite 2044 (5per thousand in xylene), and hydroxyethylcellulose (H.E.C.) (2per thousand in distilled Water). All are thermoplastic polymeric resins except for the H.E.C. which is a modified natural polymer. The 4 methods of application which were evaluated are; 1) brush the consolidant on both sides of the sample. 2) apply the consolidant under vacuum impregnation. 3) immerse the sample in the consolidant. 4) slow immersion of the sample by capillary action. The tests which were carried out on the consolidated samples and the control pieces included a test to determine their resistance to abrasion, visual and tactile comparisons, and a porosity test on the unconsolidated sample material.
