Abstract
A French limestone statue of the Magdalen dated 1507 is compared with a twin in an entombment group in a small French church. The twin is suggested to be a copy of the Yale piece. Traces of polychromy remain on it. In a technical appendix, Andrew F. Petryn of the Conservation Department, Yale Art Gallery, identifies two samples of its polychromy by optical microscopy as red: cinnabar (HgS) and blue: azunte with white lead and anhydrite These may be presumed to be the initial polychromy. -- AATA
