Abstract
The effect of television lights on objects has been investigated at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Brief remarks on the subject in this article are quoted in full: -- - In co-operation with the technical staff from WGBH-TV, the research laboratory found that lower wattage lights could be used for television than was first anticipated and that the heat absorbed by the various objects could be more readily dissipated under controlled conditions than was first believed. Experiments were carried out under various lighting and atmospheric conditions and very accurate measurements were obtained. When experiments were carried out on Chinese screens and paper, it was found, as one would expect, that the dark colors absorbed the greatest amount of heat while the lighter greens, greys, and whites reflected the heat waves. The gold on Japanese screen paintings reflected the heat waves, too, which brought about a very uneven temperature range. Because this was felt to be dangerous to the objects, it was necessary to experiment for a protective measure. The solution was to situate the objects so that air space existed behind them and to pass a current of air directly over the objects. In this way heat and humidity were controllable. -- AATA
