Abstract
This paper aims to give a general picture of the problems facing analysts and conservators when trying to identify the corrosion products of copper alloys. Aspects such as the color, physical form, crystalline (or amorphous) nature, and elemental composition of the deterioration products are considered. Some of the more unusual compounds are included as examples in the discussion of each aspect, e.g. sampleite (NaCaCu<sub>5</sub>(PO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>4</sub>Cl5H<sub>2</sub>O), eriochalcite (CuCl<sub>2</sub>2H<sub>2</sub>O), and cassiterite (SnO<sub>2</sub>).
