Abstract
This paper briefly reviews the principles behind the methods in current use for the stabilization of archaeological and marine ironwork and concludes that a better approach would be to use a nonaqueous medium. An alcoholic solution of lithium hydroxide was chosen and used to stabilize a cannon ball recovered from the sea. The ball is still perfectly stable ten years later.
