Abstract
For many copper alloy statues, style and iconography alone are not sufficient to determine with certainty the original region of manufacture. When a carefully planned procedure is followed, analytical data can be combined with the art historical and archaeological data to improve regional provenance attributions. A procedure is outlined which involves a critical evaluation of the stylistic attribution of objects, analysis of casting and decorating techniques, elemental analysis of the metal, mineralogical and elemental analysis of casting core material, and the use of a stepwise discriminant analysis (BMDP 7M program) using all technical and compositional data. The success of this procedure when applied to medieval Himalayan statues is discussed.
