Abstract
A brief survey of factual information and recent experiments on wood products and their corrosive action on metals, especially in closed spaces. A comparative study of the corrosive effects of pine and birch on metals has been made and studies are in progress concerning how pine and birch act on textile materials. The comparative advantages of interior wood fittings versus metal fittings in case of fire are also considered. Volatile organic acid from wood can give rise to severe corrosion attack on metals. Hardwood gives off more acid than softwood, new wood more than old. Even old wood can cause corrosive damage at elevated relative humidity and increased temperature. Carbamide resin and phenolic resin in woodbase boards and panels also give off acid. The author concludes that solid timber, preferably African mahogany or one of the pine varieties, should be chosen for interior fittings in museums. Only the best is good enough for the cultural heritage we are entrusted to preserve.
