Feather cleaning is often a time consuming and labour intensive procedure, given the site, complexity and delicacy of many feather objects. The functions of natural preen oils and how they are affected must be considered when cleaning agents are chosen. An approach to feather cleaning is outlined, describing techniques currently used at the British Museum. Some of the materials and methods in use in other conservation centres are briefly considered, including ultrasonics. Photographs, references.
