Abstract
To avoid removing a section from an artifact to provide indications of work hardening, a nondestructive method of assessment using comparative material is explained. An ingot of copper alloy (5% tin, 95% copper) was annealed and hammered by a modern craftsman and the results recorded to produce a section related to the adjoining surface. The four stages of the procedure are presented as a possible means of interpretation when an artifact cannot be used to produce a section for comparison.
