Abstract
Simple kinetic models describing the rate of degradation of natural fibres are discussed. It is shown that physical or mechanical properties may be substituted for chemical parameters in analysing rate data. A mechanical model for diffusion of water into a fibre is considered. Arguments are presented to demonstrate that immersion of a dry fabric directly into water produces disruptive stresses which can be minimized or eliminated by prehumidification prior to immersion.
