Two massive wooden doors comprising a gate assembly, associated with structures dating to the Republic of Texas period, were to be displayed. This necessitated stabilization. One door was in stable condition, while the other was not and required immediate treatment. Although never buried, the doors may be considered as subarchaeological remains due to their advanced state of decay, which is similar to that found in non-waterlogged archaeological wood. The project included: 1) wood identification; 2) examination of the door nails to determine any chronological information; 3) identification of the associated insect remains to provide information on species responsible for wood damage 4) stabilization of the wood with consolidants and with structural gap-filling materials; 5) exhibition in an upright position in a display frame.
