Abstract
The Conservation Analytical Laboratory has moved to the Museum Support Center; preparation of the facilities has been an important part of the planning activities. Special refresher courses in conservation have provided test situations for the graduate-level Smithsonian Conservation Training Program. Ongoing conservation research is focussing upon a study of the composition of leather and its deterioration, and the development of appropriate preservation dressings; and a study of the deterioration mechanisms of paper artifacts and their response to water washing. Five Smithsonian museums required fumigation. Environmental conditions are being monitored by the staff in ten of the buildings. Numerous other projects being carried on by the staff are noted. The Department of Archaeometry is organizing a data bank of chemical analyses (see also 21-1430). Activities of other departments are also noted. See also AATA 19-924 and 20-1374 for earlier reports. -- AATA
