Abstract
The alkaline sulfate method for the stabilization of marine cast iron developed by North and pearson (see also AATA to be supplied) was used at the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland to treat over 100 cannonballs and grenades from the site of the wreck of H.M.S. Dartmouth. Skinner discusses the chemistry and mechanics of corrosion in a marine environment and the varying condition of the cannonballs and their treatment. He is candid about the problems which arose and the modifications of procedure made to rectify them. He admits that the theoretical basis for the alkaline sulfite method has recently been questioned although the treatment seems to work. See also AATA 22-1105.
