Abstract
Varnish samples from three 18th century stringed instruments were examined by gas chromatography. No evidence was found for the use of glue or egg-tempera as a priming. In each case, pine resin and walnut oil were found. Varnish from a Tononi cello appeared to contain some mastic aad beeswax.
