This article outlines basic weaknesses of paintings that require a painting conservator. It is written in general terms for the public. Flaking paint, tears, bulges, mold, excess moisture, insect infestation, and old varnish are discussed and their suggested treatments. Basic guidance regarding packing paintings for travel is also given. Treatments such as lining, relining, and the use of adhesives for various damages are briefly discussed.
