Abstract
Analyses of more than 400 samples of fossil bone of different ages and from widely separated localities show the relative quantities of phosphate and carbonate fluctuate over a wide range, although their sum is fairly constant. It is argued that the primary process in fossilization is ion exchange and that the inorganic components of fossil bone, with the possible exception of fluorine, are of little value in determination of age due to variation in soil conditions.
