Two ancient funerary masks made of wood with applied surface layers and inlays, in very fragile condition, were examined and treated. A sample of wood from the larger mask yielded a radiocarbon date of around 1700 B.C. Microscopic study of particles from the surface materials revealed the presence of otherwise indistinguishable retouching in the matte brown layer of the larger mask. Treatment was localized and consisted of reattachment of breaking areas and consolidation of friable and flaking surface layers. A storage/display case containing pre-conditioned silica gel was made for each mask.
