A range of coin compositions is shown to possess a detectable magnetization that can be related to the geomagnetic field direction at the time of their manufacture. Roman bronze coins have been studied in particular and their magnetization is consistent with having been acquired when they were struck with the emperor's head on the lower die. Processes of silvering cause remagnetization at that time, and indicate the coins were silvered vertically.
